EQUINE HERPES VIRUS ALERT:  We are advising all horse owners and anyone involved with horses to register for special up-to-date alerts by going to OUTBREAK ALERT's special website NOW.

Please be sure to read our special Spurs Blog on EHM in the "Horse Health" section, as well.  We will do our best to keep you informed.

We must, by now, sound like a broken record.  But there's just no way around it, folks.  The more you know the better equipped you are to handle what ever may come along for you and your horse.  It is just like your elders told you, "An ounce of prevention..."  Well, you know how it goes.  Reading books, talking to other horse owners, trainers, farriers, vets and watching horses - listening to them too - all add up to a better horseman/woman/person.  Do your best to stay on top of things.
Rest assured, we'll give you a hand when ever, and how ever we can.

                                              How To Give An Injection

Here is a video on how to give your horse an injection yourself.  Make sure you have a vet or other knowledgeable person help you when you first try this yourself.

                                              Is Your Horse In Pain?

This video may provide you with some insight if you are having problems with your horse while tacking him/her up or when riding.  Hope you find it helpful.

                                              The Dreaded "C" Word

It's no laughing matter. Colic is a condition feared by horse owners.  The fear is due to the fact that colic can, in fact, be fatal if not treated. The key is prevention and, if your horse does colic, doing the right things to get your horse through it.

                                              More helpful tips on colic

This video covers some good points on colic, feeding, watering, etc.

                                              FIRST AID KIT

                                              Picture
Do you have a first aid kit for your horse?  Be sure you do, and be sure it contains what it should.

It most definitely needs to have Bute; a non-steroid anti-inflammatory and pain reliever, and Banamine*; an anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxer and fever reducer,  the 2 most prescribed drugs for horse first aid.

                                                 * As of early 2011, your equine vet may advise the use of firocoxib in oral paste form as a replacement for banamine in the treatment of colic due to studies linking banamine to complications in recovery of colic and its symptoms.  Be sure to discuss this with your equine vet.

For a complete list of what your horse's first aid kit should have, go to Green Horn Horse Facts list.

Your horse should receive a vet check at least once a year, perhaps even semi-annually.  Part of that exam will include checking your horse's teeth and , if necessary floating your horses teeth.

Your vet is a great source

                                              Picture
Pick your vet's brain for all kinds of information regarding your horse.  Make sure your horse is kept up-to-date on all shots, teeth care, etc.  Having and maintaining a healthy horse should always be your goal.  It's much more expensive to care for a sick horse.  Prevention is key.
